Placing a bet and playing
Before your very eyes is a big green betting table. This is where all the betting action takes place in roulette, either online or in land-based casinos. The idea when playing roulette, is to predict where the ball will land once the wheel stops spinning.
There are 35 numbers on a roulette wheel, and at least one zero, but if you’re correct, you’ll win. We don’t have to tell what happens if you’re wrong! If you land on the zero spot (or spots), in most cases you’ll end up with nothing. French Roulette sometimes makes an exception to that rule.
That betting board contains all of the different possible outcomes of a spin on the roulette wheel, so use your chips and place them on the betting board on the bet you wish to make. If you don’t know what the bets are, then we’ll tell you now. It won’t take too long for you to understand them, but it helps if you look at a roulette betting table, whilst learning them.

Inside bets
There are two main branches of bets in roulette: inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets are worth a lot more than outside bets, but are harder to land. A Straight Up bet is the most difficult to pull off, and involves betting on a single number.
Split bets mean that you can bet on any two numbers on the table. Street bets can see you betting on a row of any three numbers. Corner betting allows a bet on an intersection of four numbers on the table. You can also bet on six numbers, by placing your bet on the edge of two adjoining streets (used in street bets). Some American roulette games will also allow you to bet on five numbers which include the zeros.
Outside bets
If you’re new to roulette, then outside bets are a great way to start. These have a moderately good chance of coming off. You can choose a colour bet (either red or black), odd or even number bets, column bets (betting on columns of 12 numbers on the table), dozen bets (betting on the first 12 numbers, second 12 numbers or third 12 numbers), or high or low bets (betting on the first 18 numbers, or the last 18 numbers).
Variants
American Roulette is played with two zero spots (0 and 00), so it is more challenging than European Roulette, which only contains one zero spot. You therefore have a better chance of winning in European Roulette. French Roulette is virtually the same as European Roulette, although there are sometimes rule variants, which can see you win half your money back if you land on zero. Some roulette games even let you bet on zero, but these are rare.
Pay-outs
Should the ball land in a pocket which is favourable to you, you can win pretty good pay-outs in roulette. Red, black, odd, even, high or low bets always bet out at 1:1. Dozen or column bets cough up to 2:1 winnings.
For the inside bets, players can win 5:1 for six number bets, and 8:1 if they pull off a corner bet.
Any player that lands a street bet can win 11:1, whilst split bets pay-out at 17:1. Due to it being the most unlikely bet to come off, the Straight Up bet can see players win a cool 35:1. This won’t happen for most players very often, though. Unless, of course, they are exceptionally lucky.
