About Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball is the number one bat and ball sport in the USA. After a brief pre-season of exhibition games, the regular seasons begins, with 30 teams (29 American and 1 Canadian) competing to win the World Series. As one of the most watched sports in the USA (which coverage on Fox, TBS, ESPN and the MLB network), there is a huge following for a sport known as “the American pastime”.

The MLB has produced some memorable teams over the years, too, with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets incredibly famous, even amongst people who haven’t watched or don’t follow the MLB.

The history of Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball originally began as two separate leagues, known as the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). The National League was first, being founded in 1876, whilst the American League stared in 1901. In 1903, the two leagues merged into the MLB, with each league maintaining its independence and major status, though their individual winners would meet in a title decider, which would come to be known as the World Series.

This made it more difficult for other competitions such as the NA (National Association of Professional Base Ball Players), to get a foothold, even though it was one of the oldest leagues. In time, the NA would eventually become minor league baseball. The NL and AL were dissolved into the MLB proper in 2000.

The 1920s is known as the dead-ball era for MLB, since during this decade, almost no players were able to strike home runs. One reason for this is the baseball itself, which was designed not to travel far, another could be the huge stadiums which the games were being played in. Match fixing scandals also occurred to further taint the image of the sport. By the late 1920s, the spot was back, as players such as Babe Ruth soon started hitting plenty of home runs.

In the 1940s, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers decided to introduce a black baseball players to baseball leagues, known as Jackie Robinson, he wold join the Montreal Royals in 1946, before being called up to the MLB just one year later. The more would initially cause controversy, but would later signal a flurry of black players to MLB, although women were still banned until 1992. After a period of expansion, rules changes and artificial surfaces, MLB has proven itself to be one of the great sports of North America once more.

MLB teams

The teams currently playing in Major League Baseball include the Orioles, Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, White Sox, Indians, Tigers, Royals, Twins, Astros, Angels, Athletics, Mariners, Rangers, Braves, Marlins, Mets, Phillies, Nationals, Cubs, Reds, Brewers, Pirates, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Padres and Giants.

The league season

After a brief period of exhibition matches and spring training, the regular season begins. Each team will play 162 times throughout the year, from April until October. Teams will play between 5 and 7 days a week, with most games taking place at night. The teams are divided up into the American League and National League. Each league has East, West and Central divisions, with 5 teams in each division.

The teams play to win one of five playoff spots over the course of the MLB regular season. Those ten berths are occupied by the six division winners, and four wilds cards.

The playoffs and World Series

The four wild card spots are given to the two best performing teams (that weren’t winners) in each league. After MLB All-Star game, the wild cards square off to earn a spot in the playoffs proper. The AL and NL playoff teams then compete in their own division series, to determine American League and National League champions via knock-out rounds.

Those two championship winners will then meet in a best of seven final, known as the World Series. The winners of that are comically known as the world champions of baseball, even though only 29 American teams and 1 Canadian team compete.
