Many people say that baccarat is too complicated to play, but that simply isn’t true. Granted, there are complicated elements, but these can quickly be learnt. You’ll find that out as you read this guide. Baccarat is one of the most fun card games to play, and it can reward you with pretty decent winnings, too. Sometimes known as Punto Banco, baccarat allows you to wager not only on your own hand, but to instead bet on the banker’s hand, or a tie. Here’s how you play…

Betting and the deal
To begin with, you need to know what hands you are entitled to bet on. You may choose to bet on the banker’s hand, your own hand (known as the player’s hand), or a tie. A bet is placed in either the banker, player or tie spot, before the cards are dealt.
Two cards will then be dealt to both the player’s and the banker’s hands. Both the banker and the player must then announce what the total of their pair of cards is.
The value of the cards
In baccarat, all cards from 2 to 9 count for their numerical value. Suits are not used in baccarat. 10s, Jacks, Queens and Kings all count as zeros, making them effectively useless in this game. Aces on the other hand, count as ones.
Your goal when playing baccarat, is to predict which hand will win. Victory is awarded to the hand which gets closest to 9 points in total. If a hand is worth more than 9, then the second digit becomes the value of the hand. For instance, if you have a 5 and 7, then you have a total of 12. The first digit is removed, giving you a total of 2 for that hand. If you have a 3 and a Jack, you have 3.
With the first two cards dealt, if either the banker’s hand or the player’s hand contains an 8 or 9 point total, they are considered to have a “natural”, and instantly win the game. Of course, a hand totally 9, outranks one of 8. In the event of two hands being the same, it is a tie.
Under certain conditions, though, players or bankers may be required to take a third card. This is the tricky part, but stick with us, and you’ll understand it.
When a player can take a third card
The player’s hand must be resolved first. No additional cards are handed out if the player’s hand is worth 8 or 9 points. If the player has a 6 or 7 point hand, then they stand. If they have a point’s total of 5 or less, then they will take a third card, unless the banker has an 8 or 9, in which case they lose.
When thebanker can take a third card
Knowing when the banker should take a third card is more complicated. If the player stands, then the banker will take a third card if they have a point’s total of 0 to 5. Should the banker have 6 or 7, they will stand.
If the player does take a third card, and it is a 9, 10, face or ace, and the banker has 0-3 points, they will take a third card. The banker will stand on 4-7 points.
If the player’s third card is an 8, and the banker has a hand worth 0-2 points, the banker draws. If the banker has 3-7 points, they stand.
If the player’s third card is a 6 or 7, then the banker will draw if he has 0-6 points, and stand on 7.
If the player’s third card is a 4 or 5, then the banker will draw if he has 0-5 points, and stand on 6 or 7 point hands.
Finally, if the player’s third card is a 2 or 3, the banker will draw if he has a 0-4 point hand, and stand on hands worth 5-7 points.
If you have correctly bet on the winning hand, you’ll always pick up a 1:1 pay-out. Betting on the banker’s hand and winning can see you pay a small 5% commission to the house, though. If you bet on a tie, and it comes good, you’ll pocket wins of 8:1. We wouldn’t advise betting on a tie, since it rarely comes off.
