Getting ready to play

When you first look at a craps table, it can appear daunting. Shake off that thought, because it is isn’t really. What you are looking at are a series of bets, though none any more difficult to grasp than those which feature in roulette. There are about 40 craps bets on the table, but you won’t need to learn all of those right away in order to play.

Most of those craps bets have woeful odds anyway, so we won’t be bothering with them. In order to play craps, the first thing you need to learn is the Passline bet, so let’s get straight on with that.

The Passline bet

You must first place your bet on the Passline, before a shooter (that is someone who rolls the dice), rolls. In craps, you do not have to be the shooter, in order to bet. The first roll itself is called the Come Out roll. If the shooter rolls a 7 or an 11, then you’ll will win your Passline bet. If they roll a 2, 3 or 12, then you’ll lose your bet. Should any other number appear on the dice, then that number is called the point number.

The shooter now has a challenge on their hands. They must roll the same number (the point number) again, before they roll a 7. If they do that, you’ll win your Passline bet. Should they roll a 7 first, then you’ll lose your bet.

This is the simplest type of bet in craps, and the one which most people make. You see, there was nothing overly complicated about that, was there?

Odds bet

Other bets do exist, though. These bets can only take place after a point number has been established. These bets are made behind the Passline as a separate bet, known as an Odds bet. Importantly, there is no house edge with Odds bets.

When you make an Odds bet, you are actually betting on the number that the shooter will roll on the dice. Your chance of success are not very high, but stranger things have happened in the casino world. If the shooter rolls your number, then you’ll win. If he doesn’t, you’ll lose. Again, there’s nothing complicated about that.

Craps is a game of luck, and nowhere is this truer than when it comes to the Odds bet! In some cases, casinos will permit players to wager up to twice the total amount they have staked on the Passline bet, with their Odds bet. Some casinos won’t allow it, and some casinos will. It varies from casino to casino, or in our case, online craps game to game.

Payouts

The standard rate for a Passline bet in craps is to pick up winnings of 1:1. However, it is the Odds bets which offer far greater rewards. As we’ve said though, you haven’t got an overly good chance of landing them.

If the point is a 4 or 10, then the player will land 2:1 winnings. These will rise to 3:2 winnings for a 5 or a 9, and if the Odds bet is based on a point number of 6 or 8, then players will win 6:5.

Generally speaking, we’d always play with just the Passline bet, since that’s all you need to play. However, as you get more adventurous, you may wish to try the Odds bet, and look at some of the many other craps bets that are out there for you to use.
